This article explains how to install FFmpeg video engine for Reaper 4.
FFmpeg adds new options in video render, and handles really well numerous of codecs when it comes to playback!
Simply download this archive or refer to this cockos wiki article for 32bits – chapter Rendering video (Reaper 4), (I haven’t tried ffmpeg on 32bit version).
There are a lot of ffmpeg dll versions out there, the one I packed comes from cockos wiki, I found it to be the most stable so far for production environment.
Put all the .dll on the reaper root folder, should be C:\Program Files\REAPER (x64) so you end up with something like that:
Now start Reaper and go to Preferences, tab Video/REX/Misc and change your preferred video decoding engine:
Once it’s done, close and restart the application, drag and drop a video, select it, and go to source properties (CTRL+F2 by default).
You should see that’s it’s now using FFmpeg video engine !
When go to File, Render there is a new Output format :
Along with using mov container, allowing h264 and aac output, don’t forget to select the video you want to render, click on the little arrow and Get width/height… so you don’t end up with suprises !
Concerning the video bitrate, you can use this website to calculate it.
Enter your video dimensions, framerate and choose H264 High Profile, that should give you a good starting point. Simply copy/paste the value appearing in Video bitrate to the Video codec Bitrate in Reaper.
